General Information
TEI’18 invites proposals for one-day studios, to be held on Sunday the 18th of March, 2018.
Studios at TEI should encourage new and enriching perspectives on the field of tangible, embedded, and embodied interaction by combining the practical and hands-on with academic debate/discussion around the chosen topic. A studio is a hands-on experience that exposes participants to something new – a design technique, an unexpected combination of technologies, an approach to creative design – or that aims to join forces in solving a common problem. Successful Studio proposals combine theoretical and practical aspects within the realm of (design) research.
We hope that this year’s theme, Post-digital Design, inspires proposers to host studios that specifically challenge borders between the digital and the analogue and, thus, embrace the rich history of TEI (studios). We ask Studio proposers to indicate where on the continuum of practical and theoretical skills their Studio proposal can be placed and provide some insights to whether theory will drive the practical or if through practical exploration, theory may be developed.
Studios are expected to accommodate around 15 participants each and we encouraged the studios to be open to every conference participants although this is ultimately at the discretion of the studio organizers.
Each Studio will be represented by a 4-page extended abstract that will be included in the Proceedings and published in the ACM Digital Library. Organizers are also encouraged to arrange for later publications of a Studio intellectual and creative output, where appropriate.
Studio participants should be registered in the conference (additional costs will apply). A minimum number of registered participants will be required for a Studio to take place. All participants will need to register for the Studio they are attending.
Submission Guidelines
Submit a proposal as two documents (a “description” document and a “logistics” document) formatted according to the ACM Extended Abstract guidelines (see below)
DESCRIPTION document (4 pages maximum, including References):
- Part 1A: Abstract (150 words maximum)
- Part 1B: Detailed proposal description
- Part 1C: Topics to be covered
- Part 1D: Learning goals/Discussion objectives
- Part 1E: Supporting documents / images or photographs / references

LOGISTICS document (4 pages maximum):
- Part 2A: Event coordinator bio(s) (100 words each maximum)
- Part 2B: Proposed schedule (incl. detailed timeline)
- Part 2C: Bill of materials (as needed)
- Part 2D: Estimated budget (as needed)
- Part 2E: Technical Requirements (equipment and space conditions)
- Part 2F: Call for participation (for the conference website)
- Part 2G: If required: a draft ‘Call for Position Statements’

Review Process
The review process will take into account the organizers’ ability to clearly articulate a plan for a Studio that will provide an engaging hands-on experience and/or provoke rich debate. Additional criteria are: the expected community interest level on the topic, available equipment, and how the topics and processes covered complement other studio offerings. The Studio Chairs may suggest organizers of submissions that are similar in topic to collaborate on a joint session.
Publication
In order for the Studio extended abstract to appear in the conference proceedings, at least one organizer of each Studio must register for the conference and their Studio, and organizers must have secured the commitment of a minimum number of participants to attend, by the early registration deadline. For publications in the TEI Extended Abstracts, copyright remains with the author. The publication is not considered an archival publication; however, it does go into the ACM Digital Library. Because you retain copyright, as the author you are free to use this material as you like, including submitting a paper based on this work to other conferences or journals. Authors grant unrestricted permission for ACM to publish the accepted submission in the TEI Extended Abstracts without additional consideration or remuneration.
Organizers’ Responsibilities
BEFORE THE CONFERENCE
- Arrange for delivery of needed materials (options include bringing items in-person or shipping to the venue)
- If required: call for position statement submissions, and manage a review of papers
- Prepare for 12 to 15 participants
- Develop a final agenda of activities, and review with TEI’18 Studios Chairs
- Recruit participants: organizers of an accepted session are encouraged to set up and maintain a web page providing information about their Studio. However, this is not required. A minimum number of registered participants is required for a Studio to take place. It is recommended to start outreach to potential (groups of) participants as soon after the acceptance notification as possible.
AT THE CONFERENCE
Organizers are responsible for setting up the Studio before the start of the session, leading discussions and sustaining participation.
AFTER THE CONFERENCE
It is encouraged that the Studio organizers should communicate their Studio results to a larger audience after the conference. In addition to any presentations, you may make material available about the event for public consumption, self-promotion, and promotion of TEI conferences (after consent of your participants should you be showing their likeness through photos/videos and if showing their Studio projects). This material can range from online photos and videos, design documents and/or schematics, a blog, or a report for publication in an ACM Bulletin, or a similar venue.
Submission
Please submit your proposals via PCS by August 30, 2017, 11:59pm HST September 6, 2017, 11:59pm HST. You should submit two documents, the DESCRIPTION and the LOGISTICS documents (see section “Submission Guidelines”) in PDF file format.
