TEI'07 welcomes papers from all disciplines that contribute to the understanding and development of tangible and embedded interaction. Work addressing HCI issues, design, use context, tools and technologies, as well as interactive art works are all welcome, including especially interdisciplinary submissions across these themes. We invite contributions from all backgrounds, industry and academia, computer science, HCI, design, engineering, arts, architecture and so on...

Submission will be electronic and in ACM SIGCHI format. Papers can vary in length, using the ACM SIGCHI format and have either 8, 4, or 2 pages. All papers will undergo the same review process and be published in the proceedings which will be archived in the ACM Digital Library. Length must match the contribution, and the general criteria hold for all papers. Papers can be presented at the conference as a talk, a poster, an exhibit or demo, regardless of length.

The content and its representation

Authors are invited to submit high-quality papers about original research that contributes to advancing the field. Given the multidisciplinary theme of the conference, there is no exclusive list of topics - the TEI'07 Call for Papers only gives suggestions on suitable topics, but we are open for anything related to the conference theme.

Please keep in mind that you are writing for a mixed audience - explain your standpoint, your research question, the contribution your paper provides for your area or type of research (e.g. introducing a method from industrial design to HCI might not be new for designers, but be a novel contribution to HCI research), and introduce any specific terms or abbreviations. Papers will be reviewed by renown researchers with expertise in the themes of your paper - this means that some will share your disciplinary background, but others won't.

Papers for all areas will be reviewed and assessed based on the contribution they make to the field, its significance, originality, novelty, creativity, rigour, quality of thought, presentation and organisation. The length of your submission should be appropriate to its contribution.

As indicated by the suggested list of topics, there can be many different types of contribution, be it novel designs of systems, new interaction techniques, a design method, a tool helping designers and developers, a framework that helps understanding the domain, empirical findings, lessons learnt from a design case study, guidelines, etc. The contribution should be made clear in the abstract as well as the paper and authors should state clearly how their work differs or builds on previous works.

Results need to be presented in a comprehensible manner that reviewers can evaluate and follow. The appropriate criteria for quality differ for different types of contribution: e.g. truthfulness, soundness of method and rigor for experimental findings; fresh insight for observations of user behavior in real-life settings; a sound and well described design rationale and reflection on achievements, pitfalls and problematic issues for novel designs; usefulness for rules of thumb, guidelines or new methods; clear and logical argumentation combined with thorough overview of scientific knowledge on the issue in question for theoretical arguments; etc; and freshness for all types.

Content and presentation of submitted papers must be acceptable as received. Conference language is English.

Paper formats and presentation forms to choose

  • ACM SIGCHI submission format

Submissions must use the ACM SIGCHI format which you can download from http://www.chi2007.org/submit/chi2007pubsformat.doc. Papers are submitted electronically and in pdf format.

Papers can vary in length, using the ACM SIGCHI format and have either 8, 4, or 2 pages (including references, appendices, and figures). They must include title, (anonymized) author information, abstract, keywords, body, and references. The abstract must have less than 200 words and should state the paper contribution. Submissions must be anonymous. Please download the submission format file for details on how to prepare your submission including anonymizing your paper, language usage guidelines, and how to produce and test your PDF document.

All papers will undergo the same review process and be published in the proceedings which will be archived in the ACM Digital Library. Length must match the contribution and the general criteria hold for all papers alike.

Papers can be presented at the conference (independent of paper length) as either talk, poster, or exhibt respectively demo. E.g. an exhibit of a novel design can be described and reflected in an 8 page paper, while a talk on a novel sensor technique might fit 2 pages - or vice versa. Authors can indicate what type of presentation they prefer or suits their type of contribution when using the electronic submission webpage. Keep in mind that presenting an exhibit or having a poster might actually provide you with more feedback and more detailed comments on your work than a talk!

The reviewers might suggest a different format of presentation based on the contribution and type of the paper. The final decision will be taken by the TEI program chairs. Regardless of presentation format, all papers will be published alike and reviewed alike, based on their contribution to the field (thus even if you plan to present an exhibit or a performance, your paper has to stand on its own as academic writing).

If authors prefer to present an exhibit (or demo, installation, performance), they may add one page with a sketch as last page to their submission. This will not count as part of your paper, but gives reviewers more insight whether your work is suitable to be presented as an exhibit.

Preparing your submission

Paper Anonymity

Similar to many other conferences we have a double-blind reviewing process, but will use a relaxed model that does not attempt to conceal all traces of identity from the body of the paper. Please remove author and institutional identities from the title and header areas of the paper. Further suppression of identity in the body of the paper is left to the authors' discretion. Please keep citations to your previous work unanonymized, so that reviewers can ensure that previous research has been taken into account.

Papers must be no longer than 8, 4, or 2 pages including including references, appendices, and figures. If you aim to present an exhibit, you may add one additional page with a sketch of your exhibit (not counted as part of the paper). Papers must include title, (anonymized) author information, abstract of 20-200 words, keywords, body, and references.

Read the instructions on formatting in the downloaded publication format file. Papers need to adhere to these rules in order to be publishable. Formatting of pictures and illustrations is handled somewhat less strict - e.g. pictures can be half a column or 1 1/2 columns wide and have text floating around them, or you can have pictures tiled as a long, thin bar along one column. But pictures and text alike are required to stay within the allowed margins and fonts etc. are fixed.

Submission will be electronic, in ACM SIGCHI format (http://www.chi2007.org/submit/chi2007pubsformat.doc) and as PDF. The title page should include an abstract (20 to 200 words) and keywords.

ACM Classification Keywords: Category H.5 applies to information interfaces and presentation. The full list of categories for classifying work can be found at http://www.acm.org/class/1998/.

Check the pdf file created from your paper, to see if it accords to the page limit and has no printing problems.

Submission procedure

  • Submission Deadline: 20 October 2006, 17.00 (Eastern Time)
  • Submission via EDAS conference tool: http://edas.info or http://edas.info/5013

(1) If you have not been using EDAS before, you will need to register as a new user.

(2) Click on 'submit paper' or go directly to http://edas.info/listConferencesSubmit.php. Select TEI'07 from the alphabetical list. On the right you find the yellow submit icon.

(3) You will first be asked to register your paper (title, abstract, adding yourself as author). After filling out the first page, you will be able to add further authors and to submit the manuscript file.

  • Select a category (8, 4, or 2 pages length)
  • Select how you would like to present your paper (presentation form) (first items in 'Topics')
  • Select your keyword topics (these will assist us in assigning reviewers). All in all (including the presentation form indication) you may select up to 6 topics

(4) after clicking on 'submit' you can now add authors (click on the plus icon) and submit your pdf file by clicking on the icon in the 'manuscript' row. You can wait to submit your pdf later-on or update your submission (until the deadline).

Upon acceptance

  • Acceptance notification: December 1st
  • Final camera-ready copies due: December 6th
  • At least one author needs to register

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by December 1. The primary author of each accepted paper will receive detailed instructions on how to submit the camera-ready copy.

We will announce the deadline for camera-ready copies as soon as possible. As we aim to hand out printed proceedings at the conference, there may only be a few weeks time for preparing your final version.

If your submission is accepted, it will not be published without copyright release forms signed by one of the leading authors or a representative of the first author's institution.

At least one author has to register for the conference in order for the final version of your submission to be published in the conference proceedings. Information regarding registration deadlines and rates will be provided as soon as possible.
