TEI in Eindhoven


TEI 2016 will be hosted by the Industrial Design department of the Eindhoven University of Technology in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The conference's main program will be held in the Auditorium of the Eindhoven University of Technology, located at the heart of the university campus at walking distance from the central station and from hotels and restaurants in the city center. Several parts of the program, such as studio-workshops, the demo session and the conference dinner will be hosted at various locations in close proximity to the main venue.

About Eindhoven


Eindhoven has developed itself into the capital of Dutch design, with a special emphasis on high tech industries. The city is located in the so-called 'Brainport Region': a region in the Netherlands known for its high density of creative industry, high-tech industry and design education, for which it was awarded “world’s smartest region 2011”. Also, Eindhoven is host to the yearly Dutch Design Week: an event that showcases Dutch design to an ever-growing international public. The vibrant mix of technology and design make Eindhoven and TEI a perfect match.

TU/e Department of Industrial Design


The department of Industrial Design at TU/e has established itself as an internationally renowned design-research department with a particular focus on highly interactive products, systems and services. It was founded in 2001 in a close collaboration with major local and global industries such as Philips and Océ, with which they still holds close ties. It currently employs more than 200 staff members and hosts over 600 students. The department of Industrial Design has a specific focus on designing and researching intelligent systems, products and related services, which addresses aspects such as adaptive behaviour, context-awareness and highly dynamic interaction. The applied approach is one that values societal relevance, trans-disciplinarity and learning-by-doing, emphasizing the role of making and prototyping as generators of scientific knowledge.

CONFERENCE VENUES

The TU/e campus is located in the heart of Eindhoven and is a unique, green campus. The campus is first and foremost a university campus, but it also houses many other parties. The campus is a very dynamic area currently undergoing renovations to create more openness to the city, a compact, contemporary green campus, more opportunities for entrepreneurs, a better place for applied scientific studies and more space to accommodate students.

DEMO SESSIONS:

The Designhuis is a cultural centre that connects people & ideas towards a better world, empowering a more participative society driven by design thinking. Located in the monumental building of the old Eindhoven courthouse, the Designhuis opened its doors for the public for the first time in October 2007, led by Lidewij Edelkoort (2007-2009), Leonne Cuppen (2010), and Het Nieuwe Instituut (2011-2014). After a period of closure for restruction and rethinking the pn and innovation, making this an ideal location for the Demo-sessions.

DE KAZERNE

OPENING RECEPTION:
Paradijslaan 2, Eindhoven

De Kazerne, a former military police barracks and warehouse in the center of Eindhoven, has been renovated to be a spot where people from the arts, design, research and technology interact. Next to a restaurant, de Kazerne hosts a gallery that exhibits current work from trendsetting creative, a lab that stimulates collaborative crossover projects, and events that bridge divergent milieus and networks. What could be a better place to start TEI in style? The TEI opening will be a night filled with drinks, food, jazz-music, design and art works. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

RADIO ROYAAL

CONFERENCE DINNER:

Eindhoven is known as ‘the city of light’, describing its history as the location of the first Philips light bulb factory. Formerly known as a Philips industrial area, Strijp S have been taken over by the creative industry and is now home to artists, designers, and makers of various backgrounds. It is considered to be the creative and cultural heart of Eindhoven. The area has undergone a major transformation and now hosts many interesting shops, venues, artists and organisations. One of these unique venues is Radio Royaal: a restaurant located in the old machine room of the philips factory. Radio Royaal will be the venue for the TEI conference dinner.

CLOSING PARTY:

We will close TEI 2016 with a bang! The rough and conceptual atmosphere of the Tuchthuis (vinyl store and restaurant by day but hipster bar by night) will set the stage for the TEI closing party. In the back you can dance your socks off to the live party band that is playing. In the front there is a more quiet and cosy atmosphere to reminiscence on the wonderful conference days. Be in time, since our fabulous band "Bag on Wheels" starts playing at 21:30 sharp! For a preview, WATCH.
